What the State has done to companies for this

These are real enforcement actions by the California Privacy Protection Agency and the California Attorney General — the regulators who enforce these laws — against companies for the same kinds of conduct at issue here.

These agencies open investigations from complaint patterns. This request and its handling are documented and, where non-compliance is evident, reportable to both offices with the correspondence record attached.

California small claims — the basics

This is general public information, not legal advice. Whether to file, what to claim, and how to argue it are decisions for you and, ideally, a California attorney.
    • The form is SC-100 (Plaintiff's Claim). Find it and the guided flow at selfhelp.courts.ca.gov/small-claims.
    • An individual may bring unlimited claims of $2,500 or less in a year; only 2 per year may exceed $2,500. The individual limit is $12,500.
    • Under CCP §116.530, attorneys may not represent parties at the hearing. A company must appear through a regular employee or officer — not outside counsel.
    • You generally file where the defendant does business or where the transaction/injury occurred. Filing fees run about $30–$75.
    • A defendant cannot dispose of the claim by letter; to contest it they must appear, or risk a default judgment.
